Why We Built Fixt: A Contractor's Frustration With the Industry

Scott @ Fixt 6 min readMarch 20, 2026

After years in the construction industry, our founder saw the same problems over and over.

Starting in the Trenches

I have been in the construction industry my whole career. I have seen both sides — the contractor hustling for leads and the homeowner getting overcharged. The common thread? A broken system built on information asymmetry. Contractors struggle to find consistent work. Homeowners struggle to find trustworthy contractors. And the platforms that exist today? They are glorified advertising networks that charge contractors $50+ per lead regardless of whether they win the job.

The Breaking Point

The moment that inspired Fixt was watching my neighbor get quoted $2,800 for a job I knew cost $600 in materials and 3 hours of labor. When I told her the real cost, she was furious — not at the contractor, but at the system that left her with no way to know what was fair. That is when I knew: the solution is not more contractors on a list. The solution is transparency, competition, and technology.

Why AI Changes Everything

When I first saw what AI could do with photo analysis, I realized it could solve the biggest problem in home repair: the knowledge gap. If a homeowner can photograph their problem and get an instant assessment of what it is, how serious it is, and what it should cost — that changes the entire power dynamic. Suddenly the homeowner walks into every conversation informed. That one shift makes the entire market more honest.

Building for Both Sides

Fixt is not just for homeowners. Great contractors are tired of competing on Angi and Thumbtack where the platform takes a cut of every lead whether it converts or not. On Fixt, contractors pay a flat $29/month subscription. No per-lead fees. No bidding on leads. Every job posted is a real homeowner with a real problem ready to hire. The competition is on quality and price, not on who can afford the most leads.

The $10K/Month Goal

Our first milestone is simple: $10,000 in monthly platform revenue. That is approximately 345 fixer subscriptions or a combination of subscriptions and transaction fees. We are building this lean — AI handles what used to require a team of 20. Our burn rate is minimal, and every feature we ship brings us closer to a marketplace that runs itself. The home repair industry is $500 billion. We just need a tiny slice.
